The initial consultation is a chance for you to meet the team at Southern OMS.
Appointments are generally 20-30mins long.

What needs to be done prior to your initial consultation?

Fill out the form that will be emailed to you in the weeks prior to your appointment. It will require:
- contact information
- medical history; medications, allergies and previous procedures
- insurance and ACC details if they are relevant

If you are having issues with the form or would rather do it over the phone please call the practice.


What you can expect at the initial consultation.

- The team pride the themselves on being on time, so please make sure you arrive in good time for your appointment
- Additional x-rays will be taken at the start if the surgeon thinks they are required.
- Height and weight will be recorded
- A discussion about the treatment options with the surgeon
- We will discuss the different options including local anaesthetic, intra-venous sedation and general anaesthetic (completely asleep).
- A quote for the proposed treatment.

Southern OMS requires payment for the consultation on the day. This can range between $140-$350 depending on what investigations are required.

If you are at all unwell in the days leading up to your procedure please call Southern OMS and we will make a decision on the best plan going forward.

No eating or drinking 6hrs prior to the surgery, however sips of water are okay up to 2 hours prior to the procedure

Please wear comfortable, warm and loose fitting clothing. If you are comfortable not wearing makeup this is preferable.

Please brush your teeth prior to coming to your appointment if possible.

Take your regular medications unless advised otherwise. Do not take any additional medications unless directed by Southern OMS.

Please arrive 5mins prior to your procedure time. We need to confirm your details and we will require full payment.

You are not permitted to drive or operate machinery 24hrs after your procedure. You should not make any important decisions in this time. Please ensure you have a responsible adult at home with you for 6-8hours following your procedure.


Some discomfort, swelling and bleeding will be expected after any surgical procedure, including removing teeth. You will likely be numb for 4-5 hours due to the local anaesthetic you are given at the time of your surgery. It is very important to take pain killers during this time.

If there is fresh bleeding from your mouth please bite down firmly on the gauze provided by Southern OMS for 30 minutes. If the bleeding does not stop please ring Southern OMS. You will be provided with a number to ring.

Please take regular painkillers as advised by Southern OMS. Some patients will also need to take antibiotics.

Avoid spitting or rinsing your mouth out after your procedure. You can however lightly brush your teeth that night.

Please eat soft food that is not too hot in the days after your procedure.

Do warm salt water mouth-rinses twice daily starting the following day. Mix one teaspoon of salt with a quarter of a cup of warm water. Wash around for 30 seconds and then spit out. A small amount of blood is not an issue. Please ensure you start brushing your teeth properly at this time.

Often dissolvable stitches will have been used. These can take up to 3-4 weeks to fully disappear.

We will review you and check the implant 2-3 months following placement. Before this time if you feel that the implant has become loose or is moving around please make contact with Southern OMS.


We will give you a personalised take home pack after your surgery. This will include pain killers. You will also be given a prescription for stronger pain killers in case you need them.

Not everyone requires antibiotics after surgery. We will give you antibiotics if required.


Please continue to take your regular medication unless you have been advised otherwise by the practice


We are always happy to see you for a follow up appointment. There are some minor procedures that we wouldn’t routinely book a follow up appointment for.

If you feel that your symptoms are not improving and you are developing more pain, swelling and redness please call the practice and we will arrange to see you as soon as possible.
